Description Mambo was the big Latin-American dance craze of the 50s, and the music has never lost its popularity (although few can dance it well!). The Mambo dance originated in Cuba, where there were substantial settlements of Haitians (in Haiti the “Mambo” is a Voodoo priestess). The fusion of Swing and Cuban music produced this fascinating rhythm and in turn created a new sensational dance. Its “creation” is attributed to Perez Prado who introduced it at La Tropicana night-club in Havana in 1943, then took it west. Since then other Latin American bandleaders such as Tito Puente, Machito and Xavier Cugat have achieved styles of their own.

Living Era’s ¡Mambo Jambo! demonstrates all the many facets of the dance. The principal exponents are featured, such as Perez Prado (Mambo del papelero), Tito Puente (Lare lare), Machito (Mambo, featuring Charlie Parker and Flip Phillips!) and Xavier Cugat (Mambo No.5), as well as a hot of lesser-known names. There’s the jazz tinge provided by Dave Barbour, Nat King Cole with Stan Kenton, Earl Bostic and Artie Shaw. And to show that Brits can mambo, we have exotic tracks by Edmundo Ros, Roberto Inglez, Ken Mackintosh, Semprini and Eddie Calvert!

Such was Mambo’s popularity that it produced monster chart hits in 1954 for Perry Como (Papa Loves Mambo) and Rosemary Clooney (the chart-topping Mambo Italiano). It’s all here – just take your partners!
