Description Jack Payne (1899-1969), bandleader, singer, violinist, impresario and DJ was a truly representative figure of the golden age of British dance band music during the 30s. His was one of the first bands to broadcast and he directed the BBC Dance Orchestra for several years. Before establishing his own band as one of the nations great pre-war favourites.
Jacks signature tune was Say It With Music, and that is the title of Living Eras entertaining choice of 25 of his finest recordings between 1928 and 1940. Its a happy blend of sweet and hot, with stylish arrangements of the top numbers of the day such as The Clouds Will Soon Roll By or Heat Wave. In some cases they are original versions of tunes that became big hits in later years, for example Love Letters In The Sand (Pat Boone) and My Baby Just Cares For Me (Nina Simone). Jack Paynes broadcasts used to offer full variety, always including humorous novelties along the lines of My Brother Makes The Noises For The Talkies (a real piece of social history!).
Billy Scott-Coomber is the distinctive vocalist on 11 items, while Jack himself sings on several. The band always boasted many top instrumentalists, like trumpeter Jack Jackson, reeds-man E.O. Pogson, violinist Eric Siday or pianist Billy Thorburn. Original mono recordings from 1928-1940.
