- Much of the information included in this book was presented at a seminar, "Black Music in College and University Curricula" held at Indiana University from June 18-21, 1969. This seminar, the first in an annual series of related programs, was sponsored by the Indiana University Summer Sessions Office, The Indiana University Foundation, and the IRwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation. It was planned by the Black Music Committee of Indiana University's School of Music which , at that time, consisted of Professors David N. Baker, Jr. and Austin B. Caswell, with me (Dominique-Rene de Lerma) serving as chairman.Included: Black music in church and school, an experience in jazz history, black composers and the avant-garde, negro dance and its influence on negro music, a composer's viewpoint, problems relative to the publication and recording of music, faculty viewpoints, student viewpoints.
