Description
The last record and one of the best by Walter "Buddy Boy" Hawkins, from June 1929. These two sides were recorded between the first two masters by Charley Patton at his first session, so it's possible that the second voice making comments is Patton. According to the 78Q survey there's only around ten copies extant. Lots of scuffing and light scratches but only moderate wear on "Snatch" and light wear on "A Rag Blues," with almost no peak distortion on the latter side using a 3.3-mil stylus. The main problems with this record are some moisture damage that makes the first minute of "Snatch" and the first half minute of "A Rag Blues" noisier, and mis-shaped stampers that cause the stylus to jump out of the groove without extra weight due to lateral groove motion, mainly in the second half of both sides. I was able to get both sides to track fine using a Shure SS35C stylus which can handle at least 5 grams. It's possible that a more compliant cantilever will also work with the right weight and anti-skating settings. MP3 available on request. This record is from the personal collection of radio personality and music historian Barret “Dr. Demento” Hansen, who is starting to downsize portions of his collection.
